Richard Woy is a versatile artist and painter whose work includes oils, acrylics, watercolors, pastels, and graphite. His desire to create a realistic style to painting of figurative, landscape, still life, and portraiture has been guided by an earlier pursuit of medical illustration; studies of the classical trained artists/Old Masters; and workshops with talented instructors over the past decade. He believes many factors contribute to the excellence of created art; which includes continued study of drawing, expression, anatomy, proportion, chiaroscuro, composition, and color.

Richard, originally from Ohio, has lived in Florida since 1978. He began sketching portraits while sitting in church at the age of five. His only formal art education included training/mentoring by artist Keeran in pastel and tempera in his childhood years; and three years of well-rounded high school art education with mentor/artist Judy Felgar, which resulted in winning a nationally competitive scholarship to the Columbus College of Art & Design in 1966. However, he was unable to attend college due to his enlistment in the Navy with promises of a career as an illustrator draftsman. He enrolled at the Ohio State University after discharge with his major in medical illustration. He was lured away during his first semester into a physician’s assistant program and spent the next thirty-three years in a clinic practice in Ohio and Florida. In spite of being immersed in the field of medicine, he continued to paint and draw portraits, landscapes, still lifes, illustrations, and back- drops for plays.

Since 2008 he has been dedicated to re-entry into the art world. He has taken numerous workshops and courses, as well as saturated himself with reading and studying classical drawing and painting. He has associated himself with several prominent artists; and is a member of the Ocala Art Group. He initially studied and painted with the “Reflections of the Masters” group for three years. His work has shown at the Gateway Bank and Gallery as part of a six person “Tribute to the Masters Show.” His painting "Reflections of Time" was juried into the Appleton Museum/ OAG Show in 2010. He has participated in “After Hours at the Appleton Museum” demo. His entry for the 2010 OAG/Brick City "A Different Point of View" show received a ribbon for his acrylic painting "Purple Hands." He has shown several paintings at the Sabal Palm Gallery during aother “Reflections of the Masters” Show. His painting "Bottleneck Blues" was juried into the Appleton Museum OAG Balcony Show 2012, and he was an exhibitor at the Appleton Museum’s “Silver Toast to the Arts.” His painting "A Quiet Ride" was juried into the Appleton Museum OAG Show in 2013. His oil painting" After Glow" was juried into the 2015 Appleton Museum OAG Show and received a ribbon. It also received the People's Choice Award. He has done commissioned portraits, landscapes, and wildlife paintings in the last few years.
He currently is showing his work at the Artist-Alley in downtown Ocala and the Silver Springs State Park gallery. He paints with the Ocala Plein Air Painters, Figure/Portrait Group, and maintains a studio near Ocala, Florida. He continues to study classical drawing and painting along with other styles and techniques in an effort to understand and build upon the knowledge of the achievements already attained throughout art history.
